I decided to start my written journal, 'It Fell From an Unknown Height' shortly after I began my adventure into photography in 2010. At first, it came in the form of a video diary, then it turned into a weird and rather unsuccessful pod-cast; rants and rambling's about how I was feeling about both the craft and myself at the time; where I thought I fit in and where I thought my place was. Abandoning the radio-style recordings and quickly soon after the video journals, I made the decision to stick with writing, and 'It Fell From an Unknown Height' began its true life as an online journal - a place where I could let all my tensions, anxieties and thoughts go and in some manner, have them all mapped out in one singular and solitary place. The structure of the journal often bounces between the two mediums - writing, and video, or a mixture of both. The aim of this journal is not to enlighten or fascinate, to try my best to impress those that come across it - it's more of a personal document for myself, something that I can record my progress with, from my beginnings, making observations on style, content, and thought processes along the way, and how these things may change and differ over time.
The title, 'It Fell From an Unknown Height,' is one I now use for a more personal and detailed account of my time with photography and is produced slowly in the form of a printed trade-book that I see as being produced at some point way off in the future should I ever make a success of all this. For now, this online journal has taken on the name of, 'Meanwhile, in London...', a title that I used regularly online before typing out thoughts and rants to whomever was interested. For now though, it remains one of the few avenues I use to let off steam, to rant and question, to look back over and cringe ... mostly the latter. But like anything I have done, the underlying purpose in all of them is the same; they share the same basic principles ... and that's to create; for me to create something in the best manner that I can and hopefully, having an end result that's true to my original concept, vision and idea, but more importantly, for this journal at least, to contain some example and evidence of progression - and of course, the documentation of my life ... and of all the moments I experienced and witnessed within it.
